Amid the SARS CoV-2 pandemic a large urban hospital facility implemented a preoperative decolonization protocol for outpatient surgical patients. The intent was to reduce the risk of surgical site infection and readmission of the post-surgical patient. The goal was achieved. Learn how the protocol was developed, implemented, sustained, and expanded from one of the lead champions on this project.

Dr. Kari Cole holds a BS in Psychobiology and a master’s degree in Nurse Anesthesia from the University of California at Los Angeles and a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology from the USC Rossier School of Education. She is an experienced Chief Nurse Anesthetist with more than 25 years of experience as a clinical and didactic instructor at the LAC + USC Medical Center. Her areas of interest include Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®), faculty development, quality and process improvement, and patient safety.
